About Kangaroo Island Children's Services

Our History

Child Jumping

Kangaroo Island Children's Services was first known as the Kingscote Pre-school play centre which commenced in 1964 with an enrolment of about 20 children per term. Since that early beginning the service has seen many changes, relocations, new buildings, extensions and expansion to now encompass Pre-school, Long day care and Vacation/Out of school hours care at different sites across the island.

With funding from the Commonwealth Government, State Government and local community the Kangaroo Island Children's Services Inc is now a community based integrated service, managed by a Governing Council of parents.

We now provide quality accredited care and pre-school education to approximately 120 children per week and employ approximately 30 staff.

The service offers a work environment which is supportive of continuous improvement resulting in highly competent caring staff.

We offer our families and community an inclusive, safe, trustworthy and affordable service. One which continues to respond to the changing needs of the community and advocates for the wellbeing of children.

Our location

Kangaroo Island Children's Services has their main site based in Kingscote at 50 Buller Street. It is very close to the Kingscote campus of Kangaroo Island Community Education. This is where the service first started as the Kingscote Pre-school. The main site has grown to now accommodate up to 60 childcare and pre-school children from 6 months to 5 years at any one time. We have approximately 120 different children who use our services weekly - some access pre-school and childcare.

In July 2003, an outreach long day care service at Penneshaw was established by KICS using the existing kindergarten building. Childcare operates when pre-school is not using the facility. The maximum number of children using care at any one time is capped at 18.

In 2004, Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) outreach services were established at Parndana campus and Kingscote campus. We have 20 places available for After School care and Vacation care at Kingscote OSHC. Parndana OSHC closed in December 2010 due to low utilisation.
